Organic Garden Pest Control

Garden pest control relies a lot on what is called Integrated Pest Management. Gardening is best done without spoiling the delicate ecological balance that makes it beautiful. Organic garden pest control is the best option in removing pests without damaging your garden. IPM is basically a planned way of gardening that makes sense in the long run. It helps you avoid long term damages to your garden soil and plants. Or to use the EPA definition, IPM is the “coordinated use of pest and environmental information with available pest control methods to prevent unacceptable levels of pest damage by the most economical means and with the least possible hazard to people, property, and the environment.” Prevention being the best cure, it’s best to prepare beforehand to avoid running into pest control problems. Choose types of plants that are most suitable to your land. Find out about the most common types of pests in your area. Use natural ways of trapping pests like trap crops or plant row covers. Grow vegetables and plants together to slow down the spread of infestations. Promote the breeding helpful insects in your garden. Use stakes to keep the plants away from the wet ground. Mulching and crop rotation are also useful practices in organic garden pest control. Keep a close eye on your plants to spot pests early on. Holes, webs, wilted leaves are all signs of possible pests in the region. Identify the specific pest that seems to be attacking your crops and act accordingly. Next, find out how much damage this pest is potentially capable of doing. If it’s a seasonal problem or an isolated pest, you probably don’t have much to worry about. If the pest menace is really threatening, you might have to start taking serious action. Cutting off the affected leaves in case of borer activity, removing beetles by hand or removing just the infected plant are the simplest ways of dealing with garden pests. If you must use pesticides, opt for the least toxic organic pesticides available and change only when necessary.
